In Luke Chapter 8, Jesus tells the story, the parable, of the Sower. Others have rightly named this the parable of the soils. The variable in the story is not the Sower or the seed. Those two aspects stay the same. The variable in the results occurs because of the difference in the soils. Jesus tells us, in His explanation of the parable, that the seeds represent the Word of God. The various soils are the hearts of different kinds of hearers of the Word. In some instances, when the seed is cast, it falls on a heart that is hard and unyielding. The seed is snatched away by the enemy before it has a chance to take root. Some of the seeds fall on a heart that allows it to begin to grow, but since the heart isn't broken up and pliable, the seed cannot put down roots and grow. The seed has no depth, no stability, and cannot continue to grow long-term. When things get hard, these hearts fall away. Other seeds are planted in good soil, germinates and grows, but the soil is not well tended, and the weeds and cares of the world, the thorns, spring up and choke out the growth that has occurred. The final example of soil Jesus gives is the heart that is broken up, plowed, well-fertilized, ready for the seed. This soil produces a bumper crop of fruit that has been planted. The purpose of the story is to challenge you and, I to make sure our hearts are not hard and unyielding, not open to the schemes of Satan, not full of the cares of the world but broken up, pliable, loose, well-watered and fertilized and ready to receive the Word of God that will burst forth into the fruit of God in our lives. Open your lives to the work of God and see what He will do.
Blessings,
Pastor Hal
